2011 presidential elections in Cameroon: should we be alarmed?
With less than two months to the presidential elections in Cameroon, should we be alarmed as Christians?
According to the Constitution, the presidential election should be held between September 14 and October 14, 2011. The days pass and the exact date of the vote is still not known. The Congress of the Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (RDPC, ruling party) supposed to induct its national president for the future election has not even been announced yet. At most, we know that it will be held before the elections.
On the side of the people we observe almost total disinterest, out of 10 people met in the street, barely 3 claim to be registered as voters on the electoral lists. This disinterestedness of the people seems obviously linked to their dissatisfaction. The last seven-year term of the current president would have witnessed the rise in prices of many products, from basic necessities to taxes, duties and stamps without forgetting the price of fuel, to name just that.
The current president, in view of the facts, does not intend to want to comply with the demands of the people when we know that despite the 04 dark days causing more than a hundred deaths in Cameroon in February 2008 and therefore the Cameroonians were in the streets to demand a reduction in the prices of fuel, food products and the non-modification of the Cameroonian constitution, the president still had the constitution modified two months later.
The said constitution before being modified, did not allow the current president to register for the conquest of a 6th mandate. The modification therefore essentially focused on two aspects: the non-limiting of the presidential mandate which was renewable only once and the lifelong impunity of the president after his mandate. Laws which obviously represent plan A/plan B for the current president: that is to say, he can run in the current elections and if he is not elected, no one will be able to claim to touch him afterwards.
Faced with this situation, when the foundations are overturned, what will he do? Psalms 11:3
We also remember the prophecies held about Cameroon recently announcing times of trouble. As a Christian, what attitude should we adopt if not to resort to prayer for our dear nation. God says in his word: "Seek the good of the city where I have led you captive, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, because your happiness depends on his". Jeremiah 29:7
Our happiness depends on the happiness of Cameroon. We must pray!
Prayer topics:
Let us pray that the Lord Jesus Christ will be exalted in our nation and honored as God;
Let us pray that God himself will choose a leader for Cameroon;
Let us pray to refuse any form of violence or fraud in elections;
Let us pray for the peace and stability of our nation.
