Nobel Peace Prize for Christians Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Roberta Gbowee (EXPIRED)

Nobel Peace Prize for Christians Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Roberta Gbowee

The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Christians Leymah Roberta Gbowee, a committed Lutheran, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a member of the United Methodist Church and president of Liberia. They are rewarded for their commitment to peace and national reconciliation in their country. She shares this prize with the Yemeni Tawakkol Karman, founder of “Women journalists without chains”.

Tawakkul Karman, a Yemeni human rights activist known worldwide for having founded the group “Women Journalists Without Chains”, is the surprise guest of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize. “I did not expect to receive this prize,” she admitted.

The other two women are two committed Christians.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is the first woman elected by universal suffrage to the head of an African state.

This economist trained in the United States is a member of the United Methodist Church, which is part of the tradition of liberal Protestantism and contains several evangelical elements.

The Methodist Church founded by Pastor John Wesley in England has become the second largest Protestant church in the United States after the Southern Baptist Convention.

For her part, Leymah Roberta Gbowee is an activist for peace in Africa with the peace movement Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace. She regularly holds prayer meetings to support peace and security for women in Liberia.

Leymah Roberta Gbowee, president of the Lutheran Church Women in Liberia, collaborated with Comfort Freeman of the Lutheran Church Women’s Committee to found the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) which works to end the Second Civil War in Liberia.

This movement contributed to the election of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first democratically elected woman president of an African nation.

We thank God for the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Leymah Roberta Gbowee and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Their victory is that of the entire international Christian community.
